Committee Member Positions
Each member of the NSOP Committee serves a specific function. Please review the Committee position descriptions below before you begin your application.
Student Leader Coordinator
- Assist in the hiring process of crew captains (CCs) and orientation leaders (OLs) under the supervision of the Student Engagement staff
- Lead communication with the CCs and OLs throughout the course of the summer
- Assist with CC and OL training alongside staff and Immersion Experience Coordinators
- Directly interact with CCs and OLs throughout week of NSOP
- Support the work of other committee members when needed
- Work with Immersion Experience Coordinators to assign new students to orientation leader groups
- Assign orientation leaders to work events or programs during the week of NSOP
- Applicants should have experience working with spreadsheets and databases
- Applicants should have experience managing groups and projects
- Weekly hourly commitment: 24 hours, May-July; 40 hours, August to September 1
Community Events Coordinator (3 positions)
- All three positions:
- Assist in the hiring process of orientation leaders (OLs) under the supervision of Student Engagement staff
- Co-create communications to OL cohorts with Student Leader Coordinator
- Work on logistics for student programming including: schedule management, space and tech reservation tracking, transportation arrangement, and supply purchases
- Assign orientation leaders to work events or programs during the week of NSOP
- Applicants should have experience working with spreadsheets and databases
- Applicants should have experience facilitating conversations in groups with different communication styles and cultural backgrounds
- Support general NSOP programming including move-in, Convocation, required programming, social events, and/or identity mixers as needed
- Weekly hourly commitment: 24 hours, May-July; 40 hours, August to September 1
- Position Specific Responsibilities:
- Joint School and Transfer Programming Coordinator
- Works closely with Barnard Events Coordinator and General Studies Orientation Student Coordinator on four-school joint social programs
- Assist in the planning of all social events during the week of NSOP, including Open Mic Night, Roar-ee's Tailgate, Performance Showcase, late-night campus programming and other events under the supervision of the Student Engagement staff
- Implement programming for transfer, visiting and combined plan students, including move-in procedures, information sessions and social outings
- School Specific Programming Coordinator
- Assist in coordinating and planning of school specific social events during the week such as Rally Round Columbia and neighborhood tours under the supervision of the Student Engagement staff
- Work on late-night programs in residence halls with RHLO
- Meet weekly with Multicultural Affairs staff during the summer to support and develop relevant workshops and activities that support International, First Generation, Low Income Students, LGTBQ+ students, and/or Students of Color
- Joint School and Transfer Programming Coordinator
- School Specific Programming Coordinator
- Assist in coordinating and planning of school specific academic and resource programming events during the week in conjunction with Academic Affairs and other campus partners under the supervision of the Student Engagement staff
- Meet weekly with Multicultural Affairs staff during the summer to support and develop relevant workshops and activities that support International, First Generation, Low Income Students, LGTBQ+ students, and Students of Color
- Assist in designing training for cohort of OLs in conjunction with Multicultural Affairs staff
- Assist with and participate in pre-arrival webinars during the summer months as needed in conjunction with Assistant Director of Student Engagement
Communications Coordinator
- Helps coordinate the development of the orientation theme, media, communication and strategy in conjunction with the Student Engagement, Barnard Student Life and General Studies Student Life staff
- Assist in the hiring process of crew captains (CCs) and orientation leaders (OLs) under the supervision of the Student Engagement staff
- Be proficient in short video editing and creation for social media use
- Be proficient in social media use, specifically Facebook and Instagram
- Be comfortable with photography, videography and editing
- Support the staff and Committee on various projects, including raising awareness of NSOP, marketing specific events and capturing highlights of NSOP through photography and film
- Experience with Photoshop and/or InDesign is desirable
- Work closely with the Columbia College communications team on best practices for social media and visual identity
- Support the work of other committee members when needed
- Weekly hourly commitment: 24 hours, May-July; 40 hours, August to September 2
Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program Immersion Experience Coordinator
- Create and foster a sense of community within program cohort of student leaders
- Assist in the hiring process of crew captains (CCs) and orientation leaders (OLs) under the supervision of the Student Engagement staff
- Design training for cohort of OLs in conjunction with NSOP staff and Student Leader Coordinator
- Place incoming students in Immersion experiences in conjunction with other IE coords and Committee
- Coordinate Logistics for schedule of COOP experience including: schedule management, transportation, meals, equipment inventory and trip execution
- Applicants should have experience in outdoor leadership and/or education
- Support all general NSOP programming including move-in, Convocation, required programming, social events, and/or identity mixers as needed
- Weekly hourly commitment: 24 hours, May-July; 40 hours, August to September 2
Explore NYC Immersion Experience Coordinator
- Create and foster a sense of community within program cohort of student leaders
- Assist in the hiring process of crew captains (CCs) and orientation leaders (OLs) under the supervision of the Student Engagement staff
- Design training for cohort of OLs in conjunction with NSOP staff and Student Leader Coordinator
- Place incoming students in Immersion experiences in conjunction with other IE coords and Committee
- Coordinate Logistics for schedule of Explore NYC experience including: schedule management, transportation, meals, vendor payments and relationships
- Applicants should have experience in program creation
- Applicants should be familiar with NYC metro area
- Support all general NSOP programming including move-in, Convocation, required programming, social events, and/or identity mixers as needed
- Weekly hourly commitment: 24 hours, May-July; 40 hours, August to September 2
Arts and Media Immersion Experience Coordinator
- Create and foster a sense of community within program cohort of student leaders
- Assist in the hiring process of crew captains (CCs) and orientation leaders (OLs) under the supervision of the Student Engagement staff
- Design training for cohort of OLs in conjunction with NSOP staff and Student Leader Coordinator
- Place incoming students in Immersion experiences in conjunction with other IE coords and Committee
- Coordinate Logistics for schedule of Arts and Media experience including: schedule management, transportation, meals, vendor payments and relationships
- Applicants should have experience in arts leadership and/or education
- Applicants should be familiar with NYC metro area
- Support all general NSOP programming including move-in, Convocation, required programming, social events, and/or identity mixers as needed
- Weekly hourly commitment: 24 hours, May-July; 40 hours, August to September 2
Community Activism, Responsibility, and Engagement Immersion Experience Coordinator
- Create and foster a sense of community within program cohort of student leaders
- Assist in the hiring process of crew captains (CCs) and orientation leaders (OLs) under the supervision of the Student Engagement staff
- Design training for cohort of OLs in conjunction with NSOP staff and Student Leader Coordinator
- Place incoming students in Immersion experiences in conjunction with other IE coords and Committee
- Coordinate Logistics for schedule of CARE experience including: schedule management, transportation, meals, vendor payments and relationships with service sites and local non profits
- Applicants should have experience in social justice and civic engagement leadership
- Applicants should have experience facilitating dialogue around these subject areas
- Support all general NSOP programming including move-in, Convocation, required programming, social events, and/or identity mixers as needed
