Join us as we commemorate the music of jazz pianist, composer and broadcaster Marian Mcpartland, who passed away on Wednesday, 21st of August. We will pre-empt all regular programming from 6am to 6pm on Thursday to celebrate McPartland's long career. McPartland was born Margaret Marian Turner in England on March 20th of 1918. She met Chicago cornetist Jimmy McPartland while touring Europe during the Second World War, who she soon married and collaborated with in much of her work.
You will hear her work as a jazz pianist from her start playing at the Hickory House on 52nd Street in New York to her laterst recordings, as a composer in her own right and as a personality who did much to popularize this art form with her radio show Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz, which ran from 1978 to 2011. In the early afternoon you will also hear an interview from our archive with McPartland conducted by Phil Schaap in 1995. Tune in as we celebrate the life and music of this great figure in the jazz world.
