Kurt Weill is most celebrated for his collaborations with Bertolt Brecht. In both The Threepenny Opera and The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, the pair served audiences with brutal political commentaries on capitalism, all while experimenting with Brecht's legendary alienation theory; however, Weill would soon distance himself from Brecht with his full opera Die Bürgschaft. Brecht's migration to America arguably caused a major shift in his style to musical theater, yet this little-known opera shows how Weill's compositional style might have developed, had he remained in Germany. Tune in to Saturday Night At The Opera to hear conductor Julius Rudel lead this modern masterpiece. In addition to Weill's opera, this program will also feature highlights of the Metropolitan Opera's newly announced 2016-2017 season. Stepan Atamian hosts.
