WKCR is very excited to announce a special broadcast in honor of the great composer and educator, Anthony Braxton. The broadcast will run for 12 hours on Tuesday June 4th and will preempt regular programming from Cereal Music through our News and Arts Programming that evening.
Anthony Braxton, born June 4, 1945, is a pioneering American composer and multi-instrumentalist. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Braxton was an early member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. He's a leading figure in avant-garde jazz and contemporary classical music. Known for his boundary-pushing improvisation and composition, Braxton has explored diverse styles, blending free jazz, experimental, and avant-garde traditions. Braxton is a long time educator of music and musical theory. Braxton's innovative contributions have earned him widespread recognition, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1994.
For an individual with such a significant body of work and literature, WKCR will include segments throughout the day focusing on different distinct areas of his work and influence:
