From Violanta on the previous Saturday Night Opera broadcast, we heard this evening Erich Wolfgang Korngold's opera Die tote Stadt. Surrounding the main attraction were other orchestral suites and improvisations of Korngold, known primarily as one of the first great Hollywood film composers, particularly for his Oscar-winning score for The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1938. The cast of Die tote Stadt in this 1975 recording is as follows:
René Kollo (tenor) as Paul; Carol Neblett (soprano) as Marietta/Marie; Benjamin Luxon (baritone) as Frank; Rose Wagemann (mezzo) as Brigitta; Hermann Prey (baritone) as Fritz; Gabriele Fuchs & Patricia Clark (sopranos) as dancers Juliette and Lucienne; Anton de Ridder (tenor) as Gaston and Victorin; Willi Brokmeier (tenor) as Count Albert.
