Eva Brander Blackhawk is humbled to be acknowledged for her campus leadership and commitment to her Native American and Indigenous community. Coming into college one of the things she was most excited for was the strong Indigenous community. Her freshman year as a Laidlaw Scholar, she studied language revitalization and Indigenous futurism focusing on her tribe of the Western Shoshone. Her sophomore year living in the then Manhattan House, she drafted the application for, and named- Indigehouse. Indigehouse is the only place on campus dedicated solely to Indigenous people. Since then she has lived in Indigehouse for two years. She has also been the Ivy Native Council Representative, Treasurer, and is currently the President of the Native American Council. Anyone who knows Eva knows how much she loves her community and friends, and that she would do anything for them. Her fearless advocacy and unwavering commitment has certainly left a mark on the entire campus community.
More than anything else I want to express gratitude for all the people that have supported me throughout this journey. All the Indigenous faculty and alumni, my roommates and friends in Indigehouse, all the amazing Indigenous women on our executive board and in Native American Council, and of course my family. I’m reminded of a saying from College Horizons: you are your ancestors' wildest dreams :)
