Engineers Without Borders

EWB Water Project

Approximately 1500 people in Amanfrom, Ghana suffer from an extreme shortage of water, and have requested assistance from Columbia EWB's water project with developing a clean, reliable source of water. Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Columbia will study the water demand and usage of the community, test water quality and yield of the existing water sources, and conduct a hydrogeological survey.

EWB Columbia will then explore different options, including well drilling, rehabilitation of the existing well, and building a spring box with a purification system, with the goal of finding and implementing the most economically and environmentally sustainable way to supply clean water throughout the year.

EWB Columbia's efforts are driven by the needs and wants of the community, with a relationship to the target community built on mutual communication and understanding. Community labor and local materials are used to build systems, so as to enhance the sense of ownership that is essential for proper use and maintenance of the solutions EWB Columbia will design, as well as building capacity in the local economy for future development and construction projects. Sustainability is at the forefront, especially as EWB Columbia monitors these projects for proper functionality and adoption to ensure their future success
