Award Recognition

Robert D. Lilley Award for Socially Responsible Engineering
The Columbia Space Initiative (CSI) Outreach mission is dedicated to bringing space science and engineering projects to under-resourced middle schools across New York City. The team creates and delivers lessons on everything from aerodynamics and gravity to astronomy and coding, and places emphasis on hands-on science and engineering opportunities. Through CSI’s Outreach programs, middle school students design, build, and launch custom model rockets, code homemade robotic cars, design crash-resistant structures, fly drones, and see the rings of Saturn, among many other projects and experiences. The team is being recognized with the Robert D. Lilley Award for both their commitment to educational equity in STEM and for the breadth of their programs, which reached over 1,000 students in the last academic year alone.
