Civic Responsibility
Glynis is a junior in Columbia College majoring in Urban Studies, and she is being recognized for her work as the General Body Coordinator of the Columbia Housing Equity Project (HEP). HEP is a student-run, non-profit organization that works to mitigate the effects of Columbia's gentrification and displacement by providing emergency aid and support to unhoused folks in Morningside Heights and around New York City, and as the General Body Coordinator, Glynis provides coordination and support to all of HEP's operations. Glynis also directs the Columbia Policy Institute's Human Rights Center, and has used this role to organize for more equitable labor, housing, and admissions policies at Columbia. Off-campus, Glynis advocates for consumers as a student mediator for the New York State Bureau of Consumer Frauds and Protection, and researches housing affordability and access as a research intern with the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
My endless love and admiration to all of the coordinators of HEP who have weathered this year's storms with me, to my friends who take care of me when I forget how, to my mom who never stops being proud of me, and to the fearless organizers of the Columbia University Apartheid Divest Coalition.
